The choices of Williamsburg Restaurants is mind boggling. There are chain restaurants, LOTS of CHAIN RESTAURANTS!

Williamsburg restaurants

There are some great Fine Dining restaurants and then there are the local favorites.

When I travel I am always looking for the local favorites and make an effort to try them. My efforts have resulted in some of the best meals of my life!

This page is dedicated to what I think are the "not to be missed" Williamsburg restaurants.

BREAKFAST:

There are a ton of breakfast restaurants and most of them are typical breakfast places. The only place that is truly something different is the OLD CHICKAHOMINY HOUSE. This is one of the older restaurants in Williamsburg built in an 18th century home. You will find a very authentic Virginia breakfast...grits and all.

If you want a fancy breakfast you may want to check out
THE WILLIAMSBURG INN. This restaurant just got favorably reviewed in our local paper. The reviewer said to save this for a special occasion. It is excellent food and service but pricey for breakfast.

LUNCH:

For Lunch I am recommending three Williamsburg restaurants. All three are family places and not very fancy but the food is fantastic.

PAUL'S DELLY - This is a local and William & Mary college favorite. They have a huge selection of sandwiches that are typically Williamsburg. Try the Hot Holly or my favorite the Gringo. Their Greek food is also divine and authentic because the Delly is owned by Pete and George both originally from Greece.Paul's Delly is a great place for kids. It is very low key and no one will care about kid noise! If you are looking for a great dinner that is also low key try going after 6pm so you can enjoy the specials. They are usually made with fresh seafood caught by George or Pete. Most of their specials are Italian style or Greek so they are different, reasonably priced and delicious.

THE CHEESE SHOP- This local favorite is located right down in the historic area. It is a sandwich shop in the back of a gourmet shop. As soon as you walk in the tantalizing smells invade your nose. There is limited seating and usually a line but it is well worth the wait and the search for a table. They have a unique way of cutting their sandwich bread and a great house dressing. Don't skip it. It is to die for! Sometimes people just order the bread ends and a container of house dressing and eat that! The kids will like this place as well because they get to choose everything from cool barrels and shelves stocked with lots of goodies.

PIERCE'S BBQ- This Williamsburg restaurant is an institution. There is not a local in Williamsburg who has not heard of and tried Pierce's BBQ. It is some of the best BBQ in Virginia in my opinion. This restaurant has been open for decades and although it looks like a dive it is well worth the drive.

DINNER

For Dinner there are some amazing Williamsburg Restaurants. I have picked my favorites from some different styles.

FINE DINING

The Trellis- This restaurant is world famous. One meal there and you will understand why. Their menu changes seasonally and it is always excellent.

**This is not necessarily a family friendly restaurant unless your kids are older and can sit at a table for awhile. This is not a fast meal because of the different courses. You definitely need to make reservations for this one in advance. Also plan on spending approx. $30-$50 per person for your meal.

JAPANESE/SUSHI:

Hayashi:- This is our favorite Sushi/Japanese restaurant in town. The owner Lenny is a great chef and he also is very willing to meet your needs. They love kids and are very welcoming to them. They will even make special kids chopsticks! Unless you go on Saturday night you can usually get in without a reservation but, if you have a larger party you may want to consider a reservation.

ITALIAN:

Giuseppe's Italian Cafe-This is a unassuming restaurant in a strip mall but it is very good Italian Food. It is always busy and mostly with locals. To me this signals good consistent quality food. Joe, the owner, makes all of his guests feel like old friends. His lentil soup is excellent so are his homemade meatballs.

MEXICAN:

Casa Maya- This restaurant looks like and old Denny's but the food does not taste like an old Denny's. This is Mexican food with a style all it's own. Make sure to check out the daily specials they are yummy!

SEAFOOD:

*I have two recommendations one is casual and one is a little more stylish.

The Backfin-For a more casual evening I would recommend this local favorite. Their food is fresh and the potato rounds are wonderful. If you like a nice salad and crab meat try the backfin salad. If the weather is nice they have an outside deck that is fun. There is a great kids menu and I know from experience that they will add smaller portions to the menu if your child wants something not on the children's menu.

Berret's Seafood Restaurant and Raw Bar. This is the more stylish seafood place in town. They also have an outside raw bar that is casual for lunch or dinner. The real gastronomical adventure waits inside. Make sure you try the she-crab soup with the added brandy. WOW!

STEAK:

Opus 9 - This is a relatively new addition to the list of Williamsburg restaurants but it is getting rave reviews. Most people who eat there compare it to Ruth- Chris Steakhouse. Reservations are required and it is on the high end as far as prices go.

CONTEMPORARY:

Dudley's Farmhouse Grille This restaurant is a well kept secret from the tourists. I am letting you in on our secret. This is one of the best Williamsburg restaurants. It is in an old farmhouse and the food is amazing. The menu changes daily according to what is fresh and in season. As far as I can tell you can't go wrong. Make sure you make reservations however because seating is limited.
