Kings Dominion is both an amusement park and a water park. You get both parks for the same price. You can ride all the rides and play all the games on the dry side of the park and then ride all of the water rides in Waterworks. Unlike Busch Gardens and Water Country USA, both of these parks are in one location. You pay to park once and play at both parks.
My family and I enjoy visiting Kings Dominion and we have a great time. I have two young daughters and this park is geared both towards children and thrill seeking adults.
For Kids
Kings Dominion is home to Nickelodeon Central and most of the kid's rides are themed around the Nickelodeon characters like The Rugrats, Scooby-Doo,The Jetsons, Sponge Bob, Dora and Blue's Clues.
There are two kids coasters and my older daughter's favorite ride: Rugrat's Toonpike. This is a small track with cars that the kids can independently drive around following the street signs. There is a children's stage as well as a character parade and meet-n- greet with the Nickelodeon characters.
From personal experience- even if you are not doing the Waterworks section of the park-bring a complete change of clothes. They have a water maze that is irresistible to children and they will get drenched!
The WaterWorks park is very limiting for children under 48". If your children do not make this hight restriction there are only three activities in the water park they qualify to ride. In my opinion it is not worth it until your kids are over 48". If you want a more kid-friendly water park try
Water Country USA.
For Thrill Seekers
My husband is a huge thrill seeker and he has conquered all of the roller coasters at Kings Dominion. And they have a bunch!
Just listen to the screaming. You can tell it is terrifying!
They rank their thrill rides from 1-5.
Here are the rides they rank 4 and 5 on the thrill meter!

For the Hungry
The food at this park reminds me of carnival or state fair food. You can find all kinds of sinful goodies like funnel cake and fried oreos- yum! They also have incorporated some of your favorite chains right into the park. You can find
Starbucks
Chick-fil-A
Bubba Gump's Shrimp Shack
Subway
Cinnabon
Broadway Fries
They also have their own snack bars spread around the park.
The park management is more strict with what they permit you to bring into the park. They say NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINK! I can tell you that I did bring in some small snacks and water bottles but we visited on a very slow day at the end of the season. They are more strict during the high season.
The one point I have to make to parents is that the restaurants that are not chains do not offer kids menus. The only kids menus are at the Chick-fil-A and Subway.
