One very special event in Colonial Williamsburg that many locals view as the official kick off of the Christmas season is the Williamsburg Grand Illumination. Check out my advice about how to get the most out of this colonial celebration.

One of the best tips I can offer about enjoying your Colonial Williamsburg vacation is to get the schedule ahead of time! You can get a copy of the weekly schedule at many different locations around town. Look for the brochure racks and you will find the schedules nearby. Your other option is to stop at the Visitors Center when you get to town or go online and check them out before you even arrive.

Some buildings are open only in the morning and others are closed on different days. A little preparation before you arrive will maximize your experience.

You can walk through CW and Duke of Gloucester Street without a ticket. The tickets only get you admission to the Historical buildings. You can eat at the taverns and shop at the colonial straw market or Merchant Square and the colonial shops without a ticket. You can also eat at the taverns without a ticket.

If you have very young children you may want to consider just walking around without paying for a ticket. There is a good chance that your children may not have the staying power that is needed to enjoy the foundation.

I personally think the historic area of Williamsburg is a great place to explore.

But...keep in mind that, for some people, it is possible to overdose on history! I suggest that you figure out how much you can handle in a day and plan accordingly. Spreading out your time in CW will make your trip more enjoyable and relaxing. You are on vacation after all!
