Williamsburg dining steps back in time at the Taverns.

There are four Williamsburg dining experience that are just that - experiences! Go there to see what it might have been like back in colonial times at a tavern not necessarily for the food.

The taverns in Colonial Williamsburg include:

  • Christiana Campbell's Tavern
  • Chowning's Tavern
  • King's Arms Tavern
  • Shields Tavern
  • Raleigh Tavern Bakery

To decide on what tavern will be the best Williamsburg dining experience for you - use these pointers.

Chowning's Tavern:This tavern offers traditional style Pit B-B-Q. The menu includes Pork Barbecue, smoky Beef Brisket, hickory-grilled hamburgers, quarter-pound Hot Dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches, salads and other sandwiches.

A Kid's meal is available in a cute little house shaped box. They include very kid friendly food like hamburgers, hot dogs,BBQ sandwich or PB&J.

After 5pm Chowning's Tavern turns into a true 18th-century rum and alehouse. It offers light refreshments like B-B-Q Rib bites, hot drumsticks or a crock of Cheese with Sippets(little pieces of dried bread). They play 18th-century games and there are strolling balladeers. Click here for more information about special holiday programs and dining events at the taverns.

Christiana Campbell's Tavern- This tavern was George Washington's favorite place in Williamsburg for seafood. The menu includes different seafood recipes from the 18th century. (My husband recommends staying away from the sampler platter. He says there are better things on the menu!) This place also has a pretty outside garden dining area lit with lanterns and covered with by a Wisteria Arbor.

Check your schedules for Colonial Williamsburg for the special teas that happen throughout the week at 2 p.m. Mrs Campbell is always in attendance and she shares here favorite tea and tea party foods.

King's Arms Tavern- This tavern specializes in Chophouse style foods. If you prefer meat this is the tavern for you. They are known for their "Peanut Soupe" and "Norfolk Pottage Pye" along with their other authentic 18th century cuisine.

My husband visits the taverns on a pretty regular basis with clients and he recommends King's Arms for the best meal.

Check your schedule for "Breakfast with Citizens of the Revolution." This is a breakfast buffet where you can interact with character interpreters. This reminds me of the Disney character breakfasts with a little more history!

Shields Tavern This tavern is a replica of an 18th-century coffeehouse.

Starting May 6th Shields Tavern introduced a new expanded menu along with table service throughout the day.

The new menu focuses on comfort foods and favorite recipes from the revolutionary time. Reservations are only required for large groups and the dress is casual.

Most locals visit the Taverns to take guests. I would recommend that if you go to a tavern go for the atmosphere and not necessarily the food. If you enjoy the food take that as an added extra! The Williamsburg taverns will add to the flavor of your trip but not necessarily because of the food!

The second piece of advice I can offer is to stop by earlier then you intend to eat to put our name on a list if you are going to one of the taverns that does not take reservations like Shield's Tavern. If you want to visit a tavern that takes reservations try to make it as early as humanly possible...especially if you are coming during the summer.

You can view all of the menus at the Official Colonial Williamsburg site.
