Virginia Museums:
The Virginia Air and Space Museum is Out of this World!

Virginia Museums

Virginia Museums add something memorable to every vacation. The Virginia Air and Space Museum is for the flight lover in all of us. This is one of the Virginia museums that is full of hands on exhibits mostly focused on air and space travel. You can board a DC-9 or try a B-24 simulator. You can direct traffic on the runway launch a rocket or walk on the wing of a biplane.

If you or your kids are the least bit interested in flight, you will leave this museum totally fascinated by it.

What's there to See?

This Virginia museum's four major sections are described below.

  • Space Quest
This section explores the Moon, Mars & Beyond.
  • Adventures in Flight
This section focuses on all different methods of flight and different planes.
  • Special changing exhibit
This exhibit changes often and it is always very fascinating. Currently it is all about Candy!
  • IMAX 3D theater
    Larger than life Films.

    Food

    The Cosmic Cafe

This cafe is more of a snack bar then a restaurant. They have typical snack bar food. Hamburgers, BBQ sandwiches, hot dogs, muffins, candy, popcorn and drinks.

You cannot eat or drink in the galleries but if you want to bring a picnic lunch there is a park right across the street that you can eat at. There is also a carousel in the park that is open during the summer for rides.

    Gift shop

    Imagination Station Gift store

This is a very cool gift store. You will find cool and different science focused toys and games.

The Virginia Air and Space museum is loved by kids and adults alike. I have been there numerous times and I have learned something each time.

For younger children or anyone with sensitive hearing I would suggest getting ear plugs from the front desk for the IMAX movie. It is extremely loud and if you have sensitive children I would recommend sitting on the end of the aisle just in case you need to make a hasty exit. (Yes, I am speaking from personal experience!)

This Virginia museum can take up to three plus hours to see completely. This includes the time for IMAX. There is free parking across the street. Make sure you take advantage of it. The rest of the parking around the area is for two hours only and they will ticket if you go over.

    A Little More Fun ...

For some added fun, the Hampton Carousel is across the street from the museum.

It is a fully restored 1920 merry-go-round in it's own pavilion. There is a small fee for a ride, but it is worth it just so you can say you rode one of the only 200 antique carousels in the US.
